AshmoreGold Coast Suburb Profile

Ashmore is a popular, older and well-established suburb built on rolling hills and surrounded by elderly trees. Due to its elevated location, some Ashmore homes can enjoy beautiful views of the beach and ocean and back towards the Hinterland.

Ashmore
Ashmore is just that little bit removed from the hustle and bustle of the Gold Coast yet it is so opportunely centred. Ashmore's convenient central location, nestled between Southport and Benowa, grants its residents quick and easy access to the Gold Coast's pristine beaches, the bustling CBD, the Pacific Motorway, and the railway link.

The community of Ashmore is notably enriched by a significant population of older residents, supported by excellent retirement facilities within the area. This demographic contributes to the suburb's strong sense of community, evident in the numerous Community Centres and sporting grounds that dot its streets. Additionally, Ashmore boasts an abundance of parks, gardens, schools, and sporting facilities, fostering an active and engaging environment for residents of all ages.

One notable cultural asset is the Gold Coast Youth Orchestra Centre, situated on Community Drive. This centre serves as the home for various musical ensembles, including the Gold Coast Philharmonic Orchestra, Gold Coast City Choir, Youth Choir, Banana Blenders, and Rhapsody Music, further enriching the cultural tapestry of the suburb.

Ashmore History

In the late 1800s, Ashmore's land was predominantly owned by pioneering families, the Muirs and the Smiths. The suburb, located around seven kilometres west of Southport, derived its name from a farming property once owned by the Hicks family. This 300-acre farm near Benowa was named after a property by Athol Hicks, the grandson of its original owner.

In the early 1970s, investor Jim Donellon purchased land in the area for development. By the mid-1970s, a housing estate called Ashmore Village emerged, featuring sewered land and underground power, with streets named after Aboriginal words. Subsequent estates like Bellevue Park, Timbertops, Paradise River, and Paradise Heights followed. Ashmore was officially named and bounded as a suburb in 1982, experiencing steady growth in the following years.

By the mid-1980s, Ashmore became home to many young families, offering amenities such as TAFE, Ashmore City Shopping Centre, a tavern, schools, and various recreational facilities, including the Gold Coast's first roadside bike paths and a roundabout.
