The Gold Coast's beaches and hinterland mountain regions are astoundingly good which is probably why so many backpackers flock to the Gold Coast every year to enjoy sand, sun, surf and of course, the nightlife.
There are a few dozen reputable backpacker hostels on the Gold Coast (mostly located in Surfers Paradise) and more than enough tours and attractions to keep you busy ,however, most find the draw to the beach and learning to surf is often too hard to resist.
Surfers Paradise has the highest concentration of attractions and if you don't want to walk far you can go bungy jumping, ice skating or learn to surf on the same block.
The Coast has 40km of beaches so the chances of leaving without a suntan is minimal and each beach gives off a different vibe so why not try them all out?
Drinks and nightclub cover charges are reasonably cheap ($5 for a decent beer and no more than $10 to get in the best clubs) and 18-35 year olds make up a huge portion of the tourist market so you're never going to get lonely at night. There are lots of pubs, live music venues, fancy wine bars and nightclubs that will have you on the dance floor till dawn. However, most backpacker hostels are also licensed so you may not even need to leave your digs!
Surfers Paradise is the backpackers capital of the Coast and has the majority of nightclubs, but if you want to party like a local then head to one of the many Surf Clubs for a beer and then jump on a bus down to The Coolangatta (that's Cooly to you) Hotel to catch a great music act and then head back up to Surfers Paradise and hit the dance floor of Elsewhere - you might be lucky enough to catch a top DJ.
