The Gold Coast Indy 300 Carnival is by far the biggest event on the local calendar. The carnival has a long history on the Coast, is attended by hundreds of thousands of visitors, and even if it does block off the main roads and generate noise levels that send dogs into hiding, it's generally pretty well liked by locals as well.

The Indy 300 Car race is the centrepiece of the carnival and consists of a bunch of American cars tearing it up around the streets of Surfers Paradise. No one seems to know, or care, where the cars come from, where they go when they've left the country, what the driver's names are, or which team is winning the championship (although if you view the race on TV it's tremendous fun watching the Channel 10 commentators pretend) - but none of that really matters. What does matter is they are loud cars which go fast and it's a big party.

Rather than being drawn by the actual Gold Coast Indy 300 Car race true fans of motorsport in Australia are probably much more likely to get excited about the V8 Supercar race which takes place at the same time on the same track in between practice sessions for the American Cars. The event is part of the Australian V8 Supercar Championship and it happens towards the end of the season, which usually means that drivers are pretty keen to get points, and pretty keen to win. As long as it doesn't rain.
True fans of a Queensland party are probably more likely to get excited about the Miss Indy competition and associated functions which last for weeks around the actual race weekend.
