Event Description
Lights, camera, action! Movieworld isn’t the only ‘Hollywood on the Gold Coast’ this summer with 19 KAREN Contemporary Artspace hosting a Homage to Hollywood Group Show opening on Saturday 1 December from 6-8pm.
Known for their popular themed group shows, 19 KAREN is set to take it up a notch with 19 of their most colourful and creative artists taking on the Hollywood theme within each of their respective styles.
The Hollywood themed group show was dreamt up by 19 KAREN Gallery Director Terri Lew who, like most, has a fascination for all things Tinsel Town.
“Ever since I was a young girl, I had a fascination with Hollywood stars. In those days they were not called ‘celebrities’ they were called movie stars! I used to cut out pictures of movie stars from magazines and stick them into my handmade text book,” says Lew, fondly.
Seeing what the artists will come up with when the show opens will be interesting and exciting.
“I was curious to find out which of the celebrities, past or present, my artists would choose for their assignment. Some of the artists had to step out of their comfort zone and challenge themselves to create a new body of work that they have never attempted before. I am so very proud of them and I hope you will be too,” she says.
Some artists have decided to focus on celebrities, others the culture of Hollywood and its iconography.
Melbourne artist Clare Toms was inspired by the 50th anniversary of Marilyn Monroe’s passing and decided to paint her as a tribute to all that she was.
“I have long considered Marilyn Monroe in the league of classic and historical female screen icons. Her life captivated so many, and her death equally or more so, with a range of conspiracies presented as to the true cause,” says Toms.
Rebecca Murphy was inspired by the escapism that her favourite movies and books provide her with.
“I love movies for the same reason I love books - they have a way of taking you outside yourself. The characters in your favourite films become fondly remembered friends. This is my salute to a few of those Hollywood creations that influenced me so strongly,” says Murphy.
Please join us, the artists and jazz musicians Bec Whitehead and Jesse Green for the opening night of the Homage to Hollywood Group Show on Saturday 1 December 2012 from 6-8pm. Drinks and nibbles provided. To RSVP please email us at [email protected] or call us on (07) 55545 019.
