Gold Coast GovernmentFederal, State and Local Government

The Gold Coast is a City in the State of Queensland, which belongs to the Commonwealth of Australia.

Gold Coast residents and visitors are governed under three tiers of bureaucracy:

  • Federal Government (responsible for things like major highways and defence),
  • State Government (looks after schools, police and hospitals)
  • Local Government (roads, libraries, swimming pools etc.)

Navigating the interplay between local, state, and federal laws can be intricate. You might encounter situations where inquiries directed to your local Councillor get redirected to another governmental body that holds authority over matters beyond the Council's purview.

For additional information about your local representative, please visit the section on Mayor & Councillors.

Gold Coast City Council

The Gold Coast City Council region stretches from Beenleigh in the north, down to Coolangatta in the south, and Springbrook and Ormeau in the west. The area has 14 divisions and residents in each division elect a Councillor to represent their community's needs. All Gold Coast City residents elect the Mayor every 4 years.

Until 1995 the Gold Coast region had a conglomeration of local governments - the first meeting of the Gold Coast City Council in its present state was held on March 24th 1995.
