Cooly Rocks On
Cooly Rocks On is a fantastic blast from the past celebrating everything that is 50s and 60s.
Situated on the border between Coolangatta and Tweed Heads every June, the festival includes an iconic display of custom and classic cars, as well as over 1,200 hot rods that line the streets of Cooly, Kirra and Tweed.
It's over 2 kilometres of all things Rockabilly, Rock and Roll and Swing entertainment.
Spanning over 11 days, Cooly Rocks On culminates with the Grande Finale weekend that sees the streets close down, outdoor stages erected, hundreds of market stalls going up and a full program of entertainment swinging on from sun up to sun down.
Cooly Rocks On - June 2017
The Cooly Rocks On event is set to see over 2 kilometres of Rock’n’Roll, Rockabilly, swing music, classic and custom cars and all things nostalgic of the 50s and 60s.
The two week festival is great fun for the whole family. Head on down to Coolangatta and Tweed heads to see over 100 retro market stalls and just as many craft stalls, along with all the vintage styled food you can eat… probably a little bit more than you can eat.
Music will fill the venues as a line-up of over 40 acts are set to rock your socks off throughout the festival. You’ll see everything from Rockabilly bands to classic rock star impersonators, tribute bands, go go girls, blues bands, dance competitions, a glamour pageant and much more.
Joining the star-studded line-up this year is Slim Jim Phantom, US rock-n-roll royalty and legendary drummer from the Stray Cats, along with Swedish rockabilly supergroup Jack Barymore and The Bandits, Frankie J Holden and Wilbur Wilde, The Delltones, Rusty Pinto, and many more home grown and international acts. The original and probably still the biggest draw card is the incredible display of hotrods and vintage cars.
There’s a great atmosphere that draws crowds of over 80,000 people every year. Come along to see what they’re all coming back for!
If you can only make it to some of the festival make sure it’s the last weekend when the streets shut down for two days of colourful parades, club drives, vintage cars, boats and floats which make their way through the streets of Kirra and Coolangatta.
Location: Various venues through Coolangatta and Tweed Heads
Dates: 29 May – 8 June 2015
Price: Free event! (some events are ticketed)
You can easily drive to the Coolangatta though there are often closed-0ff streets during the event. Check the website for street closure information closer to the event and also check out the car park locations to take advantage of the Park ‘n’ Ride service that operates on the final weekend of the festival.
If you’re trip to the Gold Coast centres around this swinging event you can easily find accommodation in Coolangatta or Tweed Heads. You’ll be able to walk to most of the festivities while still being close to the beach and public transport, and a short drive from the major theme parks and shopping districts. The festival is only a short drive from the Gold Coast Airport so accommodation in that area would be convenient too.
While the Cooly Rocks On is a free festival some participating events are ticketed. You can get individual show tickets from the website, or download a program so you know what’s on the agenda.
