Carrara & Nerang

Situated on the Nerang River, the area is the gateway to the Gold Coast Hinterland’s farm stay resorts and a number of heritage listed national parks and nature reserves.

The extensive wetlands that once covered the Nerang and Carrara area have been converted into lakes rather than canals as done in neighbouring suburbs.

Just back from the coast line and on the edge of the Hinterland the area is that little bit quieter than the rest of the Gold Coast as it manages to maintain that peaceful township community lifestyle.

Originally sugar and cotton plantations, Carrara and Nerang began when a site for the Nerang Township was allocated on a slope overlooking the river in 1865. Nerang was the administrative centre for the region back then with a courthouse, police station and a meeting place for local councillors. Gradually Southport assumed these roles though and Nerang and Carrara managed to survive quietly as the scenic heart of the Gold Coast Hinterland.
